AKF in action ...

Bohol Sanctuary
construction underway

Quote of the Year

"See what proper
love and care can do
for an animal?"

Luis Buenaflor, Jr. of the Animal Kingdom Foundation Inc. (AKFI), on news that Sweet, an askal they rescued from a Baguio slaughter house, won as Dog of the Year in a competition in the United Kingdom.

(Reprinted from Sunday Inquirer Magazine, December 26, 2004)

Alburquerque - Finally, after almost a year of talks, negotiations and planning, construction of the Animal Sanctuary in Alburquerque, Bohol is finally underway. The said Animal Sanctuary is a joint undertaking with the Local Government of Alburquerque headed by Mayor Efren Tunggol, The Animal Kingdom Foundation Inc., and PepsiCo International.

The local government of Alburquerque, through its appointed contractor, is responsible for the physical construction of the sanctuary; PepsiCo International provided the much needed funds for the project while the Animal Kingdom Inc. managed the over-all

supervision and technical aspect of~the project in view of animal welfare considerations.

The Animal Sanctuary will house a 28 feet Python, the biggest yet in captivity, plus other animals also indigenous to the area. It can be recalled that this was the Python that was fed live dogs by its owner before AKF Inc came and stopped them; they were also taught the proper way to feed the snake.

When completed, the Animal Sanctuary will not only be the primary eco- tourism attraction for Alburquerque but also will also be an educational centre, teaching conservation and animal welfare for generations to come. (LMBJr.)
